How To Be Alternative 101
Let's dive into it all: basics, rules, ettiquette, cost, ALL OF IT!
The Basics
So what kind of "Alternative" are we talking about? What is it, and how does it work?
Firstly: Alternative is an umbrella term that encompasses all of its subcultures. It all goes down to a few things: Beliefs, Music taste, Fashion Style, and well, Being "Woke" essentially. Hear me out though:
1. Not every subculture consists of all of these.
2. You don't NEED to belong in a subculture to be alternative.
Beliefs
1. Don't be a political douchebag: Alternative culture such as punk and goth very much anti fascism, capitalism, fucked up systems, all of that. We strive for equality - Men and women, Neurodivergent/disabled individuals and Abled/Neurotypical people, Trans/LGBTQ+/Queer and Cisgender/Straight, AS WELL AS people who are outside of the Female-Male binary, People of all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds, you know the drill I hope. EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHTS TO LIVE HERE. Respect their basic rights, advocate to KEEP THEM, and aim for higher - better.
2. Be yourself: Express yourself freely. It starts with things such as self expression; Staying true to your interests, clothing style, and music taste, but this rule also applies to the nieche; You can be a therian, furry, Kemonomimi, otherkin, all of that. You can be into things that are considered "cringe". If you like something, make self inserts, fandom OCs, self-ships, and oc x canon ships! You wanna go by neopronouns and use xenogenders? Fuck yeah. All that matters is that you BE YOURSELF. UNAPOLLOGETICALLY.
3. Educate yourself: You wanna join a certain subculture? Educate yourself about its exact ettiquettes, music genres, associated styles, and most importantly, it's HISTORY. Enter with knowledge.
4. Do some good for the planet and its people: Be anti fast-fashion, anti unethical AI, go shop secondhand and upcycle your old clothes into something better. Re-use and recycle, and support small businesses if you can.
5. Respect everyone: Let everyone do as they please, as long as they're not harming anyone. Does not apply to TERFs, Bigots, N*zis, yada yada.
6. Don't be a poser.
What counts as alternative?
Any expression that is proudly outside of the norm.
What's a poser?
A poser is someone who pretends to be a part of the community - poses as a part of it.
What makes someone a poser? Entering spaces that aren't for them, claiming to be XYZ while NOT being that, wearing things that doesn't belong to them like certain band tees and patches, or anything they dont actually believe in.
What DOES NOT make someone a poser? Being new, young, and not understanding everything just yet. Just make sure you are WILLING to learn and educate yourself. And no, you dont even have to know EVERYTHING. Just know what you need to.
